The Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) hosted the first "Bankademia" workshop on January 24th and 25th in Bern. The event was co-organized by the BFH Department of Engineering and Information Technology (BFH-TI) and UBS with the goal of bringing together banks and academia to discuss research collaboration between the two sectors.

There were 24 participants coming from across Europe, half representing the finance industry and half from academic institutions. The workshop focused on understanding the current challenges of joint research projects and how to increase cooperation between banks and universities. The majority of attendees worked in areas such as IT risk, cyber-security, online fraud, and fighting cyber-criminal activity. The finance industry is a primary target of financially motivated cyber-crime and there is a clear need for banks and academia to work together more. Participant feedback from both the finance sector and academia was highly positive and BFH plans to host more Bankademia events in the future. If you are interested in attending the next Bankademia workshop please contact Prof. Bruce Nikkel.
