Study Courses

The computer scientist learns with his/her instrument –the computer – to solve problems of an extremely wide range. He/she has to be able to design and produce quickly and economically high quality software, working moreover reliably and fast in order to offer innovative and efficient computer based solutions.

All this asks for specialized knowledge and experience with different components of the computer science as well as explicit knowledge about their strength and weakness.

All study courses are structured into tutorials, which are called modules. The curriculum defines which modules are to be attended and which are optional. All in all, the study courses comprise 180 ECTS credits, which correspond to an expenditure of 5400 working hours in total, of which you study about 50% on your own. With the scheduled time of the studies an individual organization of your studies is given. Students aiming to finish the Bachelor graduation in a minimal time of 6 months choose the fulltime study form. Choosing a reduced number of modules the part-time model is chosen.

Study Courses

The acquisition of principles and methods of the software development and computer based applications are in the foreground of the first part of the studies, comprising – in addition to the intrinsic programming modules -  themes such as software engineering, data files as well as operating systems. Further, the necessary knowledge of the fields telematics, computer network and web technologies are imparted. The acquired abilities – complemented with knowledge in project management – are realized in projects of different scales. This first part of the studies is complemented with modules of natural science and mathematics as well as economics, IT-law, communication and languages.

In the second part of the study courses the student chooses – based on his/her own interest – one of four specializations, in which the relevant specialized knowledge is acquired and thus the graduation work is completed (Bachelor Thesis). At the same time various optional modules from different areas (computer science, management, communication, languages, etc.) may be chosen to complete the education. According to the choice of such modules the students can acquire a further language- or management certificate.

The table below gives a review of the divisions of the modules in the course of the studies:

After your successful graduation of the requested modules and your graduation work you receive the diploma as “Bachelor of Science in Computer Science” with a notation of your chosen specialization.

Full Time Studies / Part Time Studies

If you aim to acquire your Bachelor Graduation within a minimal time of 6 semesters, you choose the full time study form. If you choose the part time study form, you can prolong your studies over a longer period, in order to execute a part time work at the same time. You can choose from three standard variations:

Full Time Studies (bilingual), in Biel, duration: 6 semesters, commencement: fall (mid September)

Part Time Studies (bilingual) in Biel, duration: 8 semesters, commencement: spring (mid February)
The part time study courses take place on Tuesday- and Wednesday evenings (partly also in the afternoon), as well as on Friday afternoons (partly the whole day).

Extra Occupational Studies (in German), in Berne, duration: 9 semesters, commencement: fall (mid September)
The extra occupational study courses take place during two evenings between Monday and Thursday, as well as Friday all day. Extra occupational students are bound to work at least 50% during their studies, and from the third semester compulsory in the field of computer science.

A transition from one study form to another one during the studies is possible.
